Paldin

Paldin

Paldin

This is sixteen-year-old Paldin. Paldin is one of the most devoted students. Paldin works at the school as an errand boy. He attends as many classes as he can. Paldin will hopefully be moving to Japan to attend a Japanese language institute for two years before enrolling in a Japanese university. Paldin comes from a world entirely unlike Japan.

Paldin was born in his home in a remote village. His village has no electricity at all. There are also no roads to or within the village. For Paldin to get home he has to take a bus and then walk for two days. Along the trek he stays in the welcome homes of strangers. A trip to and from his village takes four days. Since there is no bank in the village in order for Paldin to collect living-money from his parents he must return to his village once a month.

Paldin’s village has only 2,000 people. There is very little in terms of formal education there. Paldin was educated in a Buddhist monastery. He was inducted in the remote boarding school at the age of eight. He lived at that monastery draped in burgundy robes until he was thirteen. He can read and write his village language, Nepali, Sanskrit, and English. In the monastery, He had to meditate for many hours a day. Paldin and the other students also had to spend three days a week in the jungle, meditating in nature and practicing martial arts. Paldin is now a low level Buddhist monk.

Paldin moved to Kathmandu alone at the age of thirteen. Paldin attended public school in the city to learn English. Paldin’s English is amazing and he has only been studying for three years. Paldin finished high school at sixteen and now he is attending the Japanese school fulltime to prepare for Japan. Paldin shares a room in an apartment with another guy from his village. The two young men cook, clean, and grow up together. Paldin has very few possessions.

Paldin is a considerate person. The level of respect Paldin shows to me, a stranger, is a true signal of confidence. Paldin likes me and wants to learn anything from me. He often sits near me and asks insightful questions. He is always eager to talk with me and let me talk.

Since Paldin is a monk, I ask him questions about life and he enlightens me with the wisdom he has gained from a steady mindful existence.
